Fabric care of Leather

Submitted by Peter

Coats and jackets: Stains should not be treated at home because solvents can often take the colour out of leather and leave a lighter patch. Take the garment to a dry cleaner who specializes in cleaning leather and explain what has caused the stain, so that they know how to deal with it. Always make sure buttons are securely fixed because if they match the coat, as is often the case, a replacement can be impossible to get.

Any tiny tears in the leather can be repaired by carefully sticking the material which has lifted off back down with a touch of clear glue. A match is ideal for pushing the surface piece firmly back down on to the skin.

Always have garments cleaned regularly and before they become too soiled.

Different kinds of leather: The different kinds of leathers used in bags and shoes need quite individual care and attention. White buckskin needs a good brush to get rid of any surplus dust, then should be cleaned with any of the proprietary brands sold for the purpose. Do not dry calf near heat as it may become dry and stiff. Buff crocodile shoes with a soft cloth after wearing and you will only need to use shoe cream occasionally. Lizard is designed for the lazy, since you just remove any dust or dirt with a soft brush and give a quick wipe with a soft dry duster. Pigskin needs fairly rough treatment. Use a wire brush after wearing and a suede cleaner from time to time.
