If flames are shooting out of an appliance, or if you see smoke or smell burning coming from one, immediately turn off the power supply at the mains, then pull out the plug, if safe to do so. If you are in any doubt as to whether you can safely and completely extinguish the fire, do not attempt to do so. Leave the room, close the door, leave the building and call the fire brigade from a neighbour's house.
If smoke comes from your oven, check to see that there is no food inside. If not, switch the oven off and wait until it has cooled down, then try cleaning it. (A continuous-cleaning oven normally smokes a little.)
If grilling creates smoke, food may be too close to the heat. Or fat may not be draining properly; if you use foil or a disposable grill pan, cut slashes in it to allow fat to drip into the pan below.
If smoke comes out of the microwave, interrupt the cycle, sort out the problem, and restart the cycle.
