Don't expect an employment agent to provide career counselling. Thier business is filling vacancies for clients, not helping individuals find the right vocation. Take the agent's assessment of your skills and potential with a grain of salt; he may even belittle you or mislead you about the job market so that you'll take the job he has available. If this happens, try another agency. To help an agency find the right job for you, write a letter stating:
Your job objective, target industry, desired salary range and the geographical areas you'd consider working in.
Your most important achievements in previous jobs, including hard facts such as increases in turnover or value of savings introduced.
A description of your personality traits that make you ideal for the job, with examples. You'll probably have to undergo an interview at the agency office and complete an application form.
Have an up-to-date but brief cv available When you get a job offer, negotiate the salary on your own; to serve his client, the agent may try to convince you to take less money. And don't be afraid to turn down a job if it's not right for you; the agent won't drop you - on the contrary, he will assume that if you've received one offer, you'll get another.
