If you think you are being followed, cross to the other side of the street and listen or glance back to see if the person crosses after you.
If you decide you are being followed, go into a place where there are lots of other people - a pub, launderette or shop, for example. If you are not near shops, go to the first house that seems to be occupied. Ask to use the phone and call the police to give them a description of the person following you. If you did not see him properly, call the police anyway so that they can look out for a person acting suspiciously. Call a taxi to take you where you want to go.
Don't use a phone box to call the police - you could be trapping yourself.
