Holding a lift button in or pushing it repeatedly may satisfy you but does nothing at all for the lift. Its electronic circuitry can register only the first call.
The same is true when a lift misses your floor. Modern lifts have load sensors that cause them to bypass floors once they've reached load capacity. Be patient; the lift will stop on its return.
Newer lifts have devices that are sensitive to pranks. If someone pushes all the buttons on his way out of the lift, the newer models will automatically cancel the calls. Just re-press the number of your floor to get moving again.
