No matter how technically proficient you may be, before you make your first transaction at an automatic machine, ask a bank official for a full explanation of how it works.

Memorise your personal identification number (PIN) as soon as you get it. Don't write your number on your banking card. If you don't trust your memory, keep a copy in a secret place at home.

Follow the ATM machine's instructions exactly. Wait until it has returned your bank card and given you the money and a printed receipt (if you have requested one) before walking away. Check the receipt to make sure that no mistake has been made.

Record each transaction in your chequebook so that it is easy to balance your bank statement. If there are any inconsistencies, tell the bank at once.

Lost your bank card? If you tell the bank immediately, you will not be liable for later transactions made on the card.
