Tips if you have bought faulty goods

Avoid the problems by choosing and shopping carefully. Before buying larger items, do some research. Read such magazines as Which? in your local library.

Many products are unsatisfactory because people purchase the wrong model or have unreasonable expectations. Remember that, while we all want a bargain, you will essentially get what you pay for. Always buy from a reputable shop.

Before buying, always seek the advice of the trader as to the expected life of the item. If he seems not to know, go else-where. Before you buy, read the instructions and ensure there is a full guarantee.

Remember that you must try out new goods straight away. If they are faulty, act immediately. If you delay you may lose your rights.

If you have a legitimate complaint, go back to the shop where you bought the goods. The faulty goods should be replaced or you should be given back your money. Don't accept a repair unless the shop will lend you a replacement item while yours is away.

If you get no satisfaction from the shop, try writing to the manufacturer identifying the problem and the shop. Enclose copies (but not the originals) of the purchase receipt and warranty. It may be easier simply to take advantage of the manufacturer's guarantee, anyway.

Lastly, consult your local Citizens Advice Bureau or Trading Standards Department.
