Tips for using extension leads

Be careful when you choose an extension lead. Just because it happens to have a multiple socket end, don't think this means that it can carry more amperage than the outlet it's plugged into. A 3 amp plug carries 720 watts maximum.

Be aware that the longer the lead, the greater the amperage drop. A 100ft/30m lead, for example, has to be heavier than a 10ft/3m lead performing the same task.

If an extension lead feels warm, consider that a stern warning. Replace it with a heavier lead or unplug an appliance or two from the multiple socket.
