Tips for looking after fingernails

If you don't have an emery board, smooth a jagged nail against the side of a matchbox.

Wear two coats of nail polish on weak nails to give protection, applying a new transparent top coat every day until the next manicure. It is better to touch up nails than to keep on using nail varnish remover.

Clean very grubby nails by washing some clothes; or mix 1 tablespoon of detergent or soap with 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and apply to the nail with a cotton bud or cotton wool wrapped round an orange stick.

To remove excess nail enamel neatly, use a cotton bud (or use cotton wool wrapped round an orange stick) dipped into nail varnish remover.

Get rid of the smell of food on your fingers by rubbing them with dry mustard, then washing them in cold water.

Remove stains with lemon juice, then rub gently with pumice; apply hand cream afterwards.
