Foreign phrases - Tips whilst travelling

Submitted by Richard

Before visiting another country, it's best to learn the language; take a course, buy tapes or borrow them from the library. But if there isn't time, take along a phrase book and dictionary or at least learn a few basics such as 'Please','Thank you', 'Good day', 'Where is . . . ' and 'Help, I need a doctor'.

Don't be afraid to use these phrases; a few words can go a long way towards making friends and getting assistance. Gestures also help. Or carry a pocket size electronic device that translates your phrases. To get the most from your sightseeing expeditions, however, consider hiring a guide.

In a country that uses a different alphabet (Japan, for example), buy a map with both foreign and English place names. Before leaving your hotel, get someone to write your destination in the native language. Carry the name, address and telephone number of your hotel with you at all times (a printed matchbook or the hotel's business card is good for this).

Keep a list of emergency telephone numbers handy, including the police, local tourist board and British embassy or consulate.
