Forgetting things - Getting out the door quickly without forgetting things
Submitted by Margaret Field
This is a tip for people who have lots of little things to remember to get out the door to work. I thought of this after watching someone have a daily crisis searching for keys, leaving, returning for a watch, leaving, returning for a pager... I'm the same way, but seeing how stressful it looked in someone else made me stop and think, "There must be a solution to this." Here's mine.
On a day when you've made it to work, go straight to the photocopier, pat yourself down, take every essential item from your person and arrange this collection in a single layer on the photocopier glass. These items may include your keys, watch, wallet, security pass, pager, cell phone, music player, lucky pen, bus pass, even your eyeglasses. Be thorough. Head to toes. Check your pockets. Press "copy".
Now you have a sheet of paper that is dark grey, except for a white place for every one of these items. Their outlines may be cryptic, so write the names of the objects in their spaces.
At home, put this on your dresser, or by the door, or on a counter - wherever makes sense for you - and then it's just a moment to put these things there. When you put down each of these things, put them there. In the morning, you'll know you're equipped and ready for blast off immediately, or, if you are missing a couple of items, you'll know immediately exactly what they are.
This can really help on the mornings you have to be somewhere earlier than usual, when it's completely crucial that you be on time, or when you know you'll have other things on your mind, such as when you're heading to a job interview, or to an exam.
