Freelancing - Tips and hints for the freelancer

Submitted by Richard

Selling your art, writing, photography and other skills is difficult, but successful freelancing can be a rewarding full-time job, or it can supplement a more stable source of income.

To help you break into the freelance market, ask your tutor, if you're still at college, for names of commercial contacts; or join a writers', artists' or photographers' group; or consult the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook in your local library for the names of appropriate organisations to contact. Many will send you samples and freelancers' guidelines if you provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope big enough for the publication you've requested.

The easiest areas to break into are local newspapers, free papers supported by advertising and regional magazines. Submit your work for no fee at first, then photocopy your published work to send to larger publications.

Subscribe to magazines for writers, photographers or artists for tips and names to know.

Once you've targeted a publication, submit several ideas for stories, photos or illustrations; you might even get an assignment and a cash advance.

If you're trying to sell your artwork or photos, make an appointment to see the art director and take along a portfolio of your work.

If you're trying to sell skills that don't fall into the categories mentioned, find appropriate companies to target in company and trade directories in your local library. Send your CV to them, and a letter which explains how you could help them as a freelance rather than as a permanent member of staff.

Be professional

Use appropriate business cards and headed paper. Do your best on every project and include a bill with each assigned submission. Be cordial but persistent when you follow up on projects you've had no word on or payments that are late.
