If a strong smell of gas wakes you up or greets you at the door, open your doors and windows to let out the gas, check your cookers to see if the gas has been left on, and check water heaters to see if a pilot light has gone out. If not, turn off the gas supply at the meter (it is off when the ridged line on the lever's spindle lies in a horizontal position), and leave your home at once. Do not use your telephone or turn on any light fixture or appliance - an electric spark can cause an explosion. Don't light matches or smoke.
Call the gas board from a pay phone or a neighbour's home (the number can be found under GAS in the telephone book). Don't return home until a service representative says that it is safe for you to do so.
When you're sure the smell is gone, turn the gas supply lever to the 'ON' position. Carefully relight all pilot lights. If your cooker has pilotless ignition, turn on each burner to test it. If a pilot won't stay lit or the smell persists, call a professional fitter to service it.
