Tips all about guarantees and warranties

Submitted by Richard

Before making a major purchase, always read the guarantee or warranty (the terms are interchangeable).

Store all your warranties, along with proofs of purchase and dated receipts, in a separate file. If you misplace a warranty, call the shop where you bought the item and ask for a copy or get them to read the terms over the telephone.

You needn't send in a warranty card to be covered by its provisions. (You won't be notified, however, if the manufacturer recalls the item.) Even if you lose the warranty, your merchandise is covered, as long as you have proof of purchase.

Manufacturer's guarantees are legally enforceable, but cannot take away your other legal rights. Where the terms of the guarantee are such that it is going to cost you money, go back to the retailer first.

If the manufacturer refuses to honour the guarantee, seek advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau.
