Health farms - Tips and ideas about health farms

Submitted by Richard

Most health farms, or clinics, are set in their own grounds and include a wide range of facilities: a gymnasium, swimming pool, sauna and outdoor sports are all likely to be available. A week or fortnight in a health farm can help you to relax and improve your fitness, appearance and health, although the high level of individual attention that you receive means that health farms are generally expensive.

Most health farms also have professional staff who are qualified to treat ailments such as back pain, liver disorders and sciatica, as well as advising on anxiety and stress. Other therapies that are often on offer include massage, yoga, reflexology, aromatherapy and osteopathy. These options usually have to be paid for as extras.

Most clinics serve a strict calorie controlled diet of mainly vegetarian meals, although some are more relaxed.

Healthy Breaks, published by the British Tourist Authority, lists all Britain's health farms and their prices. If you cannot find or order a copy of the book locally, contact the British Travel Centre, 12 Regent Street, London SW1 4PQ.

The defnition of health farm seems to be changing all the time.
Compare this article from The Independent (www.independent.co.uk/news/business/analysis-and-features/whos-the-fittest-in-the-health-farm-industry-722695.html) in 2000, with this more up-to-date () guide to health farms
