To prevent your ears from becoming inflamed when you have them pierced, make sure a stainless steel needle is used. Wear only stainless-steel earrings until your earlobes have healed up.

If you have a reaction to a ring, earrings or metal spectacle frames, clean them with surgical spirit, then use clear nail polish to coat the parts that touch the skin. Reapply the polish when it wears off. Another way to lessen irritation is to apply a proprietary hydrocortisone cream to your skin before you put on the jewellery or frames.

Nickel, a component in some jewellery metals, causes an allergic reaction in some people; if you suspect you're one of them, wear pure copper or nonmetal jewellery.

Don't wear tight-fitting metal watch straps or bracelets. Wrap a handkerchief or other fabric under a watch or bracelet especially during humid weather when you may perspire.
