Latchkey children - Tips related to latch key kids

This is not an ideal situation for school-children - particularly if they are under 16. Remember that you could be legally prosecuted for neglect if they come to harm. And you should never leave a child alone with a heating appliance such as an electric fire switched on.

Consider other options, such as paying a local childminder to take the child in until you return, or asking the school if your child can stay on late. Some schools run after-school clubs. If yours does not, suggest that one is started.

If you have to leave your child alone, prepare her by:- Playing a 'What would you do if ... ?' quiz, to check that she can cope with unforeseen problems (such as 'What would you do if someone knocked on the front door?').- Letting your child lock and unlock the door when you go out together. Leave her alone for short periods, ensuring she locks the door behind you.- Giving her small tasks to accomplish while you're out, so that she gets used to being independent.

If your child has to be on her own until you get home, leave out plenty of food and refreshment so that she doesn't have to use the cooker.

Always write down a contact number for you, a neighbour or relative and the doctor.

Ring home every day to check that she's returned safely from school. If it's not possible for you to do this, arrange for someone else to do so.

When you return, make time to talk to her about the day's events.

Should be illegal

Tips are all very well. The fact is though it should be an offence to treat children in this way. Parents should accept their responsibilties to their children or not have them in the first place.
