Some lawyers will undertake initial interviews for a low fee.

You can buy do-it-yourself legal kits that supposedly contain everything you need to draft a will or buy and sell your home. If you decide to use these, it is a good idea to have a lawyer look at the completed papers. (Because it will take less time, this will cost much less than having the lawyer prepare all the papers. And if you need guidance, it will be clear where the problems are.)

When instructing a lawyer, ask for an estimate of fees, what services the fee will cover, and when payment must be made. If you think the fee too high, or you cannot afford it, don't be afraid to negotiate for a lower rate or more time to pay -or shop around for a lawyer whose fee rate is more appropriate. Fee rates vary and some lawyers will agree fixed sums.
