Some children of average or above-average intelligence have difficulty learning and retaining information in the traditional fashion. Some early warning signs are hyperactivity; in-ability to concentrate; problems with discipline and changes in routine; lack of coordination; memory problems; and difficulties in speaking, reading and writing.

If your child exhibits any of these 'symptoms', contact your family doctor to be sure there's no medical cause. If there isn't, ask your child's school to test him and to inform you about the results. If he has a learning disability, request the school to provide a special educational programme for him. You may question or appeal any plans that do not meet with your approval.

If you feel the need for more help or support, ask your school administration about appropriate local parents' groups or contact the Rathbone Society, or the The British Dyslexia Association
