Even though you and your child may live far apart-perhaps because of schooling or divorce - you can still maintain a bond between you.

Phone regularly to keep abreast of news (such as what tests are coming up at school) and general chat. Talk about what you've been doing too, rather than bombarding your child with questions about his activities. Call at set times so that your child is prepared. Remember that not all children can talk easily on the phone, so write down a list of topics in case the conversation gets stuck.

Send cards and newspaper or magazine cuttings in the post. Children love receiving letters and these small gestures show they're still in your thoughts.

Visit each other as often as possible. Let him share your daily routine - you don't have to organise a whirlwind day of activity. Develop a set of rituals that only the two of you share, such as eating at a favourite restaurant, strolling in the park or going swimming.

Keep a set of clothes and possessions at your house so he feels he belongs. Put his name on the bedroom door (Martin's room, for example) and start a 'treasure box' of knick-knacks (such as polished stones or souvenirs). Re-examining these treasures when your child sees you may give him a sense of continuity in your relationship.
