Male menopause - Tips and hints about middle age in men

Submitted by Richard

Men don't go through the physical changes of menopause, but many experience some kind of psychological crisis in their 40s or 50s. The awareness that there are goals yet to be reached and pleasures yet to be enjoyed - and that time will, indeed, run out-can lead to anxiety, depression, self-doubt and marital discord.

If you're having such feelings, remember that they are perfectly normal and that they, too, will pass.

Here, nevertheless, are a few tips to help you get through difficult times.

Keep in mind that the trappings of youth don't make you look younger, just faintly ridiculous.

Remember that leaving your wife for a younger woman can be a mistake, and it's not really dealing with the cause of your unhappiness.

Don't worry about sex. You may not be 17 any more, but your body still works; problems in the bedroom are often the result of worrying about them. Consult your doctor to be safe.

If you dislike your job, don't just sit around complaining. Either leave or don't - then get on with your life.

Get involved in volunteer work. Find out how you can help with a local voluntary organisation, such as helping adults to read and write, helping to run a youth group or becoming a special constable or magistrate. Look in the Yellow Pages under 'Charitable & benevolent organisations' for an institution that could use your talents.

Jog, walk or join a gym so that you get at least 30 minutes of heart-pumping exercise at least three times a week (with your doctor's permission, of course). You'll look better, feel better and probably add years to your life into the bargain.
