To rid clothes of the smell of mothballs

  • Hang clothes outdoors on a windy day. To prevent a garment from blowing away, hang it on two hangers with the hooks facing in opposite directions; secure the hangers with clothes pegs.

  • Let the clothes air for a few hours, then tumble them in a warm dryer for 15 minutes.

  • Keep potpourri sachets or empty perfume bottles in drawers or cupboards to scent the clothes.

Mothball substitutes

  • Try hanging bunches of fresh or dry bay leaves in your cupboards and drawers. They're nonpoisonous but moths dislike the smell and so keep away from it.

  • Use muslin bags, clean baby socks or nylon stockings to make moth-repellent sachets. Fill with any combination of the following: orange peel, dried lavender, cloves, whole peppercorns or a mix of equal parts dried mint and rosemary.
