Paint pads - Household tips related to paint pads

These consist of a mohair surface mounted on a pad of foam, bonded to a variety of shapes of handle. They are often called pad brushes. They give a very even but thin coat of paint, and cause less spattering than a roller.

Use pads instead of a paint roller or brush for smooth and lightly textured surfaces. Do not use on rough-textured surfaces, because these can snag the mohair and damage the pads.

Be sure to thoroughly clean pad brushes in water immediately after use. Dried paint will quickly ruin them.

Thank you, I was just about to paint a textured bathroom, you saved me a headache with the idea "not" to use a paint pad... :o)

Love 'um!

What marvellous things these paint pads are! I've used paint pads for a few years. I used them first when I was about 16 years old whilst doing a favour for my grandmother and am still being used as the family decorator at the age of 23.

The pads are really easy to use, BUT make sure you buy a decent one. I've used a few cheapy ones and the handle just slips off and you end up getting paint all over your hands. The ones by Stanley are pretty sturdy and the mohair gives a nice finish.

OK so tips on how to use them. First of all with all other painting tools don't overload the paint pad! You'll just end up adding too much and getting drips, a few good coats is better than one shoddy one. Another tip has already been mentioned - don't scrimp on the pennies, buy a good one. Another tip - go in the same direction (i.e. from one side of the room to the other) otherwise it may end up looking patchy.

Well there's no room left for any more tips! I hope my 2c helped somebody.

Have used pads.

Have used pads on a new plastered wall and ceiling
I used an emulsion paint. At first it was hard going but then thinned the paint with water and they worked OK.A very nice shine on the surfaces with no stroke marks when it all dried. You must wash the pads with a good soapy solution.

Very dated and inaccurate.

I came across this site expecting useful tips on using paint pads as I am about to use them for the very first time, and wanted to ensure a good finish.

However, I couldn't believe that what is written on this page is considered tips on how best to use them. It gives NO information whatsoever, other than what anyone reading the packaging in a DIY store would have gathered.

I wanted to know whether the paint should be thinned or not, plus any other practical tips, hopefully provided by someone who has already used them.
