Be sure to choose the right type of roller for the job in hand. Use a foam roller for general painting where a high-quality finish is not required. For fine finishes choose a mohair roller. For textured surfaces, use a shaggy imitation sheepskin or nylon roller. For exterior walls, choose a special exterior-grade loose-pile nylon roller which can stand up to rough surfaces.
If a roller is coated with emulsion paint and you plan to use it the next day, don't bother to clean it. Wrap the roller in plastic food wrap.
For getting into awkward spots such as behind radiators, look out for miniature rollers designed specially for the job.
Textured surfaces are fashionable. There are special textured paint rollers available, with sleeves designed to produce a variety of patterns.
