If you need a work visa, or are visiting other countries, you will need a full passport. This can be obtained from regional Passport Offices. Post Offices have forms and details. Apply in good time by post for a passport or renewal. In the summer this may take some weeks. Emergency personal applications can be made, but you will have to travel to the office and be prepared to wait. Take a completed form, photos and personal evidence with you.

If you need a visa, get this well in advance from the consulate of the country concerned, usually based at the embassy in London.

Passports are valuable on the black market. Always keep yours safe. If your hotel or an official wishes to retain it, get a receipt for it.

Make photocopies of your passport in case of loss or theft. Leave one at home and keep others in your luggage, plus spare photos.

If you lose your passport at home, report it to the police; if you're abroad, go to the nearest British consulate, embassy or high commission.
