Don't store old pewter in oak furniture, which is particularly acid; pewter corrodes easily in acid conditions.
Remove corrosion from old pewter by rubbing it gently with fine steel wool dipped in linseed, olive or vegetable oil.
If you like your pewter to have a soft glow rather than a bright shine, wash it in soapy water and buff with a soft cloth.
