If your photos are fading, your album itself may be the culprit. Cheap albums have high-acid paper that eventually disintegrates and gives off harmful fumes; the effect is increased if plastic sleeves enclose the page. Moreover, the adhesive that holds the pictures to the page can also cause fading.

Keep important pictures in sealed polyethylene bags (don't use other kinds of plastic), with a small bag of moisture-absorbing silica gel (like the one that came packed with your new camera) in each. Store colour prints in a dark place; light accelerates fading, as do heat and humidity. Protect slides in the same way.

Where you store pictures is important, too. Avoid attics (too hot) and basements (too damp). A cupboard in the middle of the house is the best.
