If you keep a supply of film at home, you can extend its shelf life by keeping it in the refrigerator. Putting it in the freezer extends the expiry date by a year, but this only applies to medium-speed films, up to ISO 200. Fast films of 400 to 1000 ISO or above are not affected by freezing.
If film gets jammed in your camera, you can rescue the pictures already on the roll by making a 'darkroom' with a dark-coloured jacket or coat. Put the garment on back-to-front so that your hands stick through the ends of the sleeves. Then turn it inside-out and lay it on a table in front of you without removing your hands. Place the camera inside and have someone pile clothing or pillows around the edges to further block the light. Open the camera, remove the film, and rewind it by hand.
If you are indoors you can also open the camera under a duvet or the bed-clothes or in an under stairs cupboard.
