Power cuts - How to prepare and deal with a power cut

With advance warning, you can do a lot to ease the problems of sudden power loss. Even without warning, a power cut need not be a disaster.

Be prepared Stock up on torches and batteries, including at least one high-power model. Have a transistor radio on hand to keep you entertained.

Make sure you have plenty of candles (in holders to minimise the danger) and perhaps some oil lamps and a camp stove. Don't keep fuel in the lamps or stove, but have it nearby.

If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, be sure you have enough fuel in stock. If you depend on electric heat, invest in a safe paraffin heater and be sure it can be properly vented.

Maintain an emergency supply of tinned and dry foods. Replace them regularly.

If you cook with electricity, have a substitute cooker on hand-such as a charcoal grill or camping stove - but make sure you have adequate ventilation whenever you use it.

When a power cut occurs

If you receive advance warning of a cut, do a big shop and fill up the car's petrol tank.

Make sure your oil lamps or lanterns work properly. Place both the lamps and candles throughout the house, making sure they're in the open on surfaces which won't burn. For safety, place each on a piece of foil.

Take enough food for immediate needs out of your fridge and freezer - fresh food from the refrigerator for today, frozen food from the freezer for tomorrow. Then leave both appliances closed for the duration of the cut.

Switch off all air conditioners, ovens, microwaves, computers, television sets and other domestic appliances.
