Press studs - Household tips related to press studs

An easy way to position a metal press stud is to fix the ball half to the overlapping edge of the garment with a dab of fabric glue. Rub the end of the ball with a pencil and press it down onto the opposing piece of fabric to mark where the centre of the socket half should be on the garment. Dab glue on the spot and press the socket to it. When the glue dries, sew on the press studs.

If your press stud comes off and you're without needle and thread, hold the opening closed with a safety pin, paper clip or sticky tape.

If you are dressmaking for a small child, or for an elderly relative with arthritic hands, use Velcro 'buttons' the size of a 10 pence piece instead of press studs. They're much easier to undo. Stitch the top and bottom of the Velcro circles in place and disguise with a button.
