Pumpkins - Jack o'lanterns for Halloween

Most people use pumpkins to make Jack o'lanterns for Halloween, although they can also be eaten as sweet pumpkin pie.

To make a lantern, take a large round pumpkin (or swede) with a flat bottom. Draw a face on one side, placing the mouth high enough so a candle inside won't be seen. Then cut a circular lid around the stem at the top (the hole must be large enough for your hand to pass through), and remove it. Cut away the stringy material on the inside of the lid, and then remove the seeds and membrane from inside the pumpkin. Cut out the face with a sharp knife. Place a candle in a holder inside the pumpkin, light it and replace the lid. Put it on a window sill away from curtains or other flammable material.
