Quackery - Be wary of exaggerated medical claims or cures

Be wary of exaggerated claims - a guaranteed, fast, easy, painless miracle cure that sounds too good to be true probably is.

Question claims that a product is ahead of its time or that the medical establishment is trying to suppress it or persecute its promoters.

Think twice about travelling to a foreign country for an expensive 'cure'.

Suspect unspecified 'scientific studies' and testimonials by 'satisfied users'.

Don't assume that an advertisement in a reputable publication is an endorsement; most publications don't screen their advertisements.

If you have questions about dubious drugs and medical devices that are sent to you by mail order, ask your doctor, the self-help group or society for a particular disease, or the local trading standards department.

Anyone can call himself 'doctor', obtain an elegant diploma and hang it on his wall, or print impressive looking letters after his name. Only take notice of qualifications if you know what they mean. Check unfamiliar or suspicious credentials.
