Many countries (including Australia, Ireland and the United States) require animals to be quarantined for 2 to 6 months before entering the country. This experience can be very stressful for a pet. If your pet is old or sickly, consult a vet as to whether it will be able to cope with quarantine. If possible, leave the animal at home with a trusted friend.
If you must take your pet with you, contact the relevant consulate or embassy well in advance to reserve a space in a quarantine facility. Try to arrange for one that will be near you and allows visits. Find out who to contact in case problems arise.
If allowed, provide your pet with a toy and something that has familiar scents on it - a blanket or a pillowcase stuffed with old clothing from each family member.
When your pet is released, take it to a vet for a checkup. Find out what it has been eating. An abrupt change in food could make the animal sick - the vet may suggest a transitional diet.
