Quiz shows - Tips and hints to appear on a game show

To get on your favourite quiz show, keep an eye out for addresses screened at the end of shows asking for contestants to apply. Alternatively, write to the television company concerned or scan their website. If the show is independently produced, they will give you the address of the production company. Some shows simply select from the studio audience on the night. If so, keep applying for show tickets.

The first thing potential contestants are usually asked to do is to fill in a questionnaire. Mention anything that makes you unusual or different.

If you are asked to go further, you will usually be invited to the production unit for a screen test. Expect this to be at your own expense. You may be asked to do a written test. It is likely that you'll do a mock version of the show. Do whatever is needed to make you look more eye-catching and interesting than other potential candidates, but it is not wise to appear to be too clever.

Once selected, watch the show as often as you can, get the rules down pat, and work out a strategy for winning. Then practise: sit under a bright lamp to simulate the studio lights and ask your family to take pictures of you while you rehearse so that you'll get over being camera shy.

Weeks or months before the screening, you may be invited to return to the studio, again at your own expense. Some shows are recorded only in late spring or early summer - a convenient time for a contestant to plan a holiday to coincide with the recording.

On the final screening of the show, you are likely to get at least a consolation prize, but accept that you may be out of pocket. Any prizes won should not subject to taxation.
