Shiny moving objects in your garden will frighten rabbits away. Hang aluminium pie plates or pieces of kitchen foil from lines across your garden.

Or make a homemade rabbit repellent in your blender. Puree two peeled cloves of garlic and three chilli peppers in 12fl oz/340ml of water for 2 minutes. Steep the mixture for 24 hours, strain, and add 1 tablespoon of washing-up liquid. Dilute with 3 pints/1.7 litres of water and spray the plants that attract rabbits.

Put up a 2ft/610mm high fence of 1½in/38mm chicken wire. Plant the posts deeply and make sure the bottom of the wire extends at least 6in/ 150mm below the soil line.

Surround your vegetable garden with a double row of onions; rabbits hate the smell and won't cross the rows.
