Hints and tips for razor bumps and nicks whilst shaving

To prevent razor cuts and marks, shower before shaving or steam your face over a basin of hot running water before applying shaving cream, to open up the pores. Shave in the same direction as the hair grows, using a light touch and long strokes; avoid going over the same area more than twice.

Rinse a nick with cold water, then press hard. If the bleeding persists, hold a small piece of tissue paper to the cut until it sticks. Remove when dry. For deep cuts apply an antibiotic ointment or cream.

To loosen ingrown hairs that can cause bumps, clean your face with a loofah sponge. If you have just one or two such hairs, pluck them out with a sterilised needle or tweezers; if you have more, consider using a depilatory cream.

If you have run out of shaving cream, use soap or baby oil instead.
