Never work on a roof unless you are happy with heights and have the right equipment.
You need a ladder which extends high enough to give at least three clear rungs above gutter level, so you always have a handhold. And the ladder must be secured so that it can't slide or slip in any direction.
To work on the roof, hire a special roof ladder which is designed to hook securely over the ridge. Do not move off the ladder yourself; always get down and move the ladder, however inconvenient it may seem at the time.
Whenever possible, have a helper to pass up materials for use on the roof. Never balance or wedge materials on a sloping roof. If they fall, they could cause serious accidents.
If working as a helper, always wear a safety helmet. This can be hired at the same time as the roof ladder.
If you stand a ladder on a flat roof area, always place a piece of rough board underneath the ladder base. This will protect the flat roof coating. But also make sure you anchor the ladder so that it can't slide off the wood.
