Sanitation - Tips and hints for sanitation in the wild

Don't bury leftover food at your camp-site. Wild animals will just dig it up and perhaps bother the next camper in the vicinity. Take empty tins, bottles and food scraps with you when you leave.

Make sure you bury human faeces at least 4-12in/100-300mm deep. Save the overlying soil to hide the hole. In areas of little soil, follow local recommendations for shallow burial and cover waste with whatever soil is available. In rocky terrain, remove a rock, use the depression beneath it as a toilet, then place the rock on top again. Don't move rocks from one spot to another, though, as this creates unsightly pits in the ground.

For a latrine that will be used by more than one person and will have to decompose more waste, lengthen rather than deepen the hole.

Be sure toilet areas are at least 100ft/30m from watercourses, foot-paths and campsites.

Use biodegradable, chemical and dye-free toilet paper. Or burn toilet paper after use.

Improvise a toothbrush by chewing the end of a green twig. Bicarbonate of soda, salt or ash can all serve as substitutes for toothpaste.
