If you are going on a seaside holiday somewhere where there are sharks, check with local inhabitants whether there is any danger of a shark attack before you go in the water. If there are lifeguards on the beach, ask them too.
Stay out of the water if you have an open cut or scratch; sharks are thought to be attracted to blood.
Avoid swimming near sewage outlets away from the shore; sharks are more likely to congregate there.
Swim with at least one other person to keep watch for danger, and don't swim too far out to sea.
