If you've prepared the ingredients for shish kebab but can't find your skewers, cut new ones from unpainted wire coat hangers. Or look in the toolbox for some heavy-gauge wire. Or slice the food into small pieces and stir-fry it instead. (Just be sure to cook the meat - especially pork and chicken - longer than the vegetables.)
If you use a single-pronged skewer, you may find that when you turn it the food doesn't turn with it. Solve the problem by using two-pronged skewers. Or simply thread the ingredients onto two skewers instead of one.
When camping, improvise skewers by peeling the bark off thin green twigs and sharpening the ends.
Use skewers to speed up the cooking time of baked potatoes. Clean the potatoes as usual and then push a skewer through each one lengthways. Or cook several potatoes on one long skewer.
