Don't slam on the brakes-it only makes the skid worse. Instead, take your foot off the accelerator and turn the wheel gently in the direction of the skid. When the front wheels start to grip the road surface, begin to steer again (but be prepared to counter another skid in the opposite direction). Very gently apply light accelerator pressure.
