Occasionally in Britain the snowfall is heavy enough to make it possible to go tobogganing. Here are some ideas for homemade sledges.
Flatten some large corrugated card-board boxes to sit on. For a toboggan (which seats several people), use a refrigerator-sized box.
Or you can slide down a hill on a tray, a dustbin lid (without handles) or the inner tube of a car tyre.
You may have an inflatable plastic lilo which has been punctured and is sitting in the loft waiting for you to throw it away; uninflated, it will make a perfectly good sledge.
Sheets of sturdy plastic, such as an old shower curtain, will also make good sledges.
Unless the snow is very deep and the area is free from rocks and tree stumps, make sure you use a firm base for your sledge, to avoid injury.
