Smoking - Hints and tips for giving up smoking

Stopping smoking isn't easy, but it may be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. If you've failed before, the following suggestions may help you.

Investigate your options - from 'cold turkey' and nicotine chewing gum to acupuncture (in which a small needle is left in your ear), videotapes and self-help group programmes. Nicotine patches are available through the NHS and work by releasing small amounts of nicotine into the system through the skin.

Be prepared for withdrawal symptoms. Anxiety, restlessness, irritability, lethargy, impatience, confusion and lack ofconcentration are common. So are coughing, headaches, insomnia and appetite swings. Take a brisk walk or do aerobic exercises to make you forget about your withdrawal symptoms and to burn energy.

Join forces with another smoker who wants to stop and give each other moral support.

Enlist a former smoker to help you through the rough times and focus you on the benefits of stopping.

Get rid of all ashtrays, matches and lighters. Spend more time in places where you can't smoke.

Get your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist; resolve to keep them free of nicotine stains.

Keep your mouth and hands busy: Chew sugarless gum, nibble raw vegetables and fruits, drink liquids through a straw; play with worry beads or an 'executive toy'.

Put the money you used to spend on cigarettes in a special bank account; use the proceeds to reward yourself for every week you succeed.

If you fail, try again. Many smokers need three or four tries.
