Add a few drops of DAWN dishwashing liquid to your pet's bath/shampoo. It will kill the fleas right away. You can also add a few drops with some water in a small dish and place it on the floor and the fleas will jump in and die.
Fleas in your carpet? 20 Mule Team Borax-sprinkle and let stand for 24 hours. I have also used salt for this. The baby fleas eat the salt thinking it is the mother's feces and die.
