Licorice for gastric reflux

Submitted by Pat

Licorice (not the candy, but the supplement found in the drug store) has completely stopped my acid reflux pain. Whereas I used to have such frequent, and intense pain, that I wondered if I was having a heart attack, licorice capsules has eliminated them.

I empty two capsules into a cup of hot water and drink as I would a tea. And, it has the added benefit of tasking really good if you're like me and like the taste of licorice.

This worked when Mylanta, Pepcid AC, and a number of other over the counter pharmaceuticals did not.

My husband having recently suffered a heart attack is having very bad bouts of indigestion, and as you mention not sure if the pain is heart or indigestion and neither do the medics.

This is an excellent tip as I first bought him liquorice sticks from the health store to help him stop smoking and we have just realised that when he was chewing these he did not have indigestion as bad. Will be paying a visit to our local health store tomorrow for these capsules. If this works we will let the cardiac rehab unit know for them to pass onto others.

Licorice Root for in digestion Comments By: Wendy Smailes on 2005-08-14
Licorice root - the wooden stick variety - can be made into a infusion. Snap the stick into smaller pieces, put into a polythene bag, and hit it with a hammer. Put one or two small pieces of root in a small pan with about 10 ounces of boiling water, the juice of a lemon, and a tablespoon of honey, and boil hard for 5 minutes. Allow it to cool, and strain through a sieve. Keep in the fridge for up to three days. Sip this when you have heartburn. This cured my husband's severe acute heartburn for several months. Traditional OTC remedies were ineffective. He claims this was a miracle cure. Please be careful with licorice. You should never take licorice remedies without checking with your Doctor because Licorice contains a stimulant (Glycyrrhizic acid) which stimulate the adrenal cortex to produce hormones. Or you could buy the Licorice Capsules.
