Dog food. Cheap dog food

If you don't like paying those high prices for cat or dog food you are not alone. Usually the content of the food is going to be similar, but your cat or dog might not like the taste. You can still save money buying inexpensive cat or dog food by adding leftover juices from meats and your dinners to the food and your pet will eat it right up!

Cheap pet food is NOT of the same quality Comments By: erika on 2004-07-20
Cheap pet food is NOT of the same quality of some of the better and more expensive pet foods. even some of the more expensive foods are rubbish. pet food is often made with ingredients not fit for human consumption like ligaments (which are undigestable), spoiled meat or cancerous tissue. the grains are often not whole grains but nutritionless husks. foods are sprayed with rancid deep fat oil disgarded by restaurants to make the food more palatable because without it the smell is so horrible no animal would eat it. if you want to improve your pet's diet then research your foods and buy only those made with human quality ingredients.

unhealthy dog Comments By: I_have_a_healthy_dog on 2004-07-28
Cheap dog food makes your dog unhealthy. Why would you want to make your dog more unhealthy by adding cheap broth and gravy to it???

Do not feed your animals cheaply! Comments By: Shannon on 2004-07-30
Cheap dog or cat food is just that. Cheap! Your animal and its health depend on the food you choose for them to ingest.

If you're confused on what's an appropriate/healthier food than what you give now, go to your vet and ask, or to a local pet wharehouse and talk to a pet specialist.

Knowledge is power. Don't be ignorant.

Read the ingredients Comments By: Jeff on 2005-01-31
Just do a google search and see how most dog food is made. Usually the more well known a brand of dog food, the worse it is for your dog. If you want a quality dog food that is cheaper, use a more expensive dog food. What?? That's right. Many quality dog foods like Wellness and Flint River Ranch are available, they cost more per bag but you feed your dog 1/2 as much as a cheap dog food (because it is baked, not extruded). This works out to be cheaper in the long run. By the way, your dog will love it with nothing extra put on it. A quality dog food contains no corn, wheat, white rice or animal fats, which most dog foods use as their main ingredient. These are nothing more than fillers and you're throwing your money away feeding them to your dog. I just switched my dogs to Wellness, and within 2 weeks they have a new bounce in their step and look great.

Do you love your pet? Comments By: Linda on 2005-07-07
Would you give your dog a moldy piece
of cheese? Take them to a groomer who
injures them? Why would you give your
dog cheap food covered up by a tempting
broth? Do your homework. If you love your dog, it's worth them time and expense to keep him healthy

Worst Advice Ever Comments By: Anon on 2005-08-09
This is very poor, irresponsible advice. I cringe when I see people buying "Ole Roy" at Walmart. Its the dog food equivalent to McDonalds food. Sure it tastes good, dogs love it, but it is poor quality garbage that will not do your dog any favors. Its borderline animal abuse. Dogs depend on you to take care of them and feeding good quality dog food is a good start. Its not that much more expensive to get the quality food and it might pay off with less money spent at the vet. If you don't believe this, ask your vet. He will probably recommend Iams, Science Diet or similar.

Stop Killing Your Pets Comments By: Sharon on 2006-12-28
Do you know all gro store brand dog food is nothing but corn, wheat and soy and by products.By products are all the dead cows pigs, chicks, diseased animals thats took to rendering plants. So sure you buy cheap, its all fillers and cheap way to add protein for the companys. And you people wondering why your pets itch and shed and get sick..Do some research,The first 10 ingrigents will tell you whats in your foods.I my Self will only use Blue Buffalo its Human grade,no corn, soy or wheat and the Chicken and Lamb is free range feed so it has no hormones or bad things in body to injest in your pets.It has life source bits thats been freeze dried and put back into food to give it vitemins and minerals,as you know when you cook any food you tend to cook that all out,but with the way its done with Blue adding it back in with the bits,I know my dogs are getting real nutriton.Check it out your self.

Appalling! Comments By: 3 Hound Mommy on 2008-06-06
I am appalled that anyone can think that feeding your dog anything less than human grade dog food is ok as long as their dogs LOOK healthy?!!! There are many people out there that LOOK healthy, and from one day to the next they find out they have cancer or even suffer from a stroke or heart attack. Animals are the same. Diseases take years to manifest in the body, and the poor grade "food" available for dogs these days are the causes of these awful diseases. Diseased poultry and beef, animal carcasses, rotting animals that are supposed to be cremated but sent to these companies instead to be ground into store bought kibble and colored with red 40 and other chemicals for some appeal. Wake up people. This cannot be healthy for any living creature on this planet. If you love your dog, feed your dog decent food and also save on medical bills in the future. I use The Honest Kitchen Dehydrated Raw Food (Human Grade). Their products are wonderful. There is also Flint River, Natural Balance (if you're more on a budget) and many more. Do your research. It doesn't take much effort to find valuable information on the internet. I apologize for my intensity but this attitude towards animals has got to change.

Same OLD arguement.... Comments By: Galen on 2008-09-01
Since when did dogs NEED to start eating "human grade" food? Ever seen a farm dog? They eat the nastiest "roadkill" type stuff and LOVE it. A dog isn't supposed to have "human grade" food. People have just been conditioned to believe they do. Your dog will do fine on "Old Roy" and other cheaper brands. Everyone feeds what they want but, don't be fooled by hype and "scientific studies"....

Yes, don't be fooled by learning something . . . Comments By: Neocog on 2008-11-04
Just to point out that if your farm dogs are eating roadkill they are still eating better then the useless matter in Ol' Roy. The idea here is that a dog's or cat's body is fit for processing particular types of food. Meat is pretty much their natural primary food source, even more with cats. Cheap pet foods have more grains (you ever see a dog shuck a corn cob? or graze?) than protein, and the protein is barely even meat. By-products usually refers to rendered tissues such as tendons, skin and hair. Yes, a dog might naturally eat those things but only because they chew through them to get to the meat. Human grade pet food simply indicates that it is free of dangerous levels of pesticides, poisonous chemicals (melamine anyone?) and that the meat is fresh when added to the product.

Whats Wrong ?! Comments By: Anon on 2008-12-28
Everyone is going very over the top about cheap dog food. Cheap dog food is NOT going to kill your pet, it is just as good, and even if it isnt as tasty, adding gravy isn't cheap. You eat gravy dont you ? or is it too cheap :| People who leave mindless comments like that need to think a bit. People dont die if they eat cheaper food? do they ?!

Use Your Brains People Comments By: Anon on 2009-01-16
I have had several dogs and they all ate cheap dog food. Just because it is inexpensive does not mean it does not contain the nutrients your pet needs. My first pet was a mixed breed..lab/husky. She ate "Moist&Meaty) het entire life...and lived to be 20 years old...I am serious! My other dogs (labs) are doing just fine...one is 7 healthy as an ox and the other is 12.

I have 4 dogs and feed them what you all consider cheap dog food. My oldest dog is 15 and drinks from the toilet instead of her water bowl. She has eaten cheap food her whole life and can keep up with my 2 year old lab. She is way healthier than most of these dogs on their "special foods" that are plagued with allergies and hip problems and every other issue a dog can have. Give me a break. A dog is a dog not a person. Given the change they would probably choose to eat out of the garbage or the cat box vs your fancy dog food LOL

sassies say Comments By: BOB PORTER on 2010-02-03
Everyone has an opinion on what to feed a dog. There is no doubt that a persons budget dictates what dog food people buy.
Expensive well advertised foods are not always the best food for your dog.
Some are full of rubbish.
It amazes me that dog owners are prepared to pay "top wack" for a pedigree dog but then whinge about the cost of the food.
All foods have to meet a certain minimum criteria for quality but minimum is not always adequate.
Dog owners who say that their dogs thrive on cheaper supermarket and budget brands
probably add table scraps to the diet, this would definitely enhance the quality.
A dog has no choice in the food it eats
but it deserves the best an owner can afford.Named meat meal as the first ingredient in the food is
the criteria I use

Buy cheaper and use meat juices? Comments By: Aaron on 2010-02-11
Ok so let me feed you some dog meat and put some prime rib juice on it. Would that be ok. You are clueless. Do you know that many dog food companies actually put dead animals in their food like dead dogs and cats. This is sick and twisted. pay for the better food and treat your dog like a living creature. We have used wellness for two years now and we feed 1 1/2 cups 2xs a day. not a rediculous 3 cups or more twice a day. may cost more but you save in the long run. People need to get out of the walmart mentality that society has come to. Cheaper is not always better for the bottom line. we will all see when the country spins out of control. It has already started. If people would just understand that if we buy more all natural foods be it for pet or human that the prices will come down. Visit your local grocer or ma and pa store. Not Walmart. Treat your pets as humans or as you would yourself.

Let people feed their dogs what they like... Comments By: DogRescuer123 on 2010-04-23
People are getting way too obsessed about dog food. I personally wouldn't feed my dog the cheapest foods, but there's nothing wrong with feeding something like Purina Dog Chow. I've tried better foods like Canidae, Natural Balance, etc., and they didn't like those foods. Since feeding the dogs Purina, they all finally seem to love what they are eating, and all have a firm stool. When I want to upgrade/alternate, I will buy them Rachel Ray's Nutrish (which they liked) or Purina One--both contain meat as the first ingredient. Neither of those foods cost too much, and are healthy enough for the dogs without spending some ridiculous amount for a bag of food.

Not sure why people are so concerned about corn, especially if the dog does fine with it. Many dogs live a long life on Purina and even on the very cheap foods. I had a large dog that ate inexpensive foods and lived to be 14--he only died due to a problem large breeds get w/their spine which caused paralysis. He was healthy/active prior to that. My parents' dog lived to be over 18, and he ONLY ate Purina Dog Chow his whole life.

For all those "bashers", at least people feeding cheaper foods are FEEDING their dogs. Plus--you don't know what kind of situations people are in or what life has thrown their way. It's not always easy for some people to continue caring for a pet (or several pets), but at least they try and feed the pets what they can--and I am SURE the pets appreciate it.

Anyhow, no ONE food is the best. I have read reviews online about people having bad experiences with some of the most expensive dog food brands. People should stick with what works for them and their dogs.

The truth about animal and people nutrition Comments By: brooke on 2010-10-08
It is not necessarily true that cheap food is bad and expensive food is good, but it is true that super cheap food is bad. For example, I buy my dogs a food called orijen for around $70 dollars for a bag around 26lbs. My friend buys chicken soup dog food for around $35 a 35lb bag. I have another friend that buys science diet for $46 a 30lb bag.

Orijen is considered one of the top foods these days, and I dont feed it because it is the most expensive. I bought it not knowing the price, and brought it to the register because of the wonderful ingredients and the low carb level.

My friend feeds chicken soup that is a very good brand and is half the price. She cant feed orijen if she wanted to, because it is too rich for her dog. Chicken soup has very good quality ingredients as well.

Science diet is supposed to be a good food recommended by vets, because research was done to make all of the percentages of fat, protein etc perfect, but in doing so they stuffed the food with mostly corn and by-products. This dog food was more than the chicken soup but a far less quality food. Dont just go by the price, read the ingredients.
A lot of foods that are super inexpensive are usually always bad because they have a ton of corn in it. Corn is cheap, so ya.... buying super cheap dog food is usually bad.

If you drink soda with corn syrup everyday, 5 times a day, then that is unhealthy

if u eat McDonalds hamburgers everyday whos cows are fed an over 80% corn diet, then ya... unhealthy.

Would you put 8 corn on the cobs down for your dog everyday for a meal, or would u do that everyday???

you could say this is my opinion, but it is not.

Whether your dog food is expensive or not, a food made up of mostly corn is not an okay food to feed and is technically abusive the same way they feed our meat cows mostly corn diets these days.

If your argument is that they eat road kill and gross animals in the wild and that is why a bad food like ol roy is ok, then you do not know your facts.

in the wild, dogs eat mostly all protein including all the animals organs and stomach. inside the animals stomach, there are a small amount of berries, grass etc. Dogs in the wild DO NOT eat loads of carbs!!!!!!!!

ole roy, pedigree, iams, science diet, most of the shit in the grocery store all have corn in it and over 50% carbs. Dogs in the wild eat way less then 20% carbs

If you never realized that the food you are feeding is made up of mostly corn and/or didnt know it is bad, now u do. its not your fault u were feeding a food that u thought was good because of marketing, but now u know, so change plz.

if u dont believe me, then research the facts on corn.

not only that, but feed your dog a better food and u will notice a difference in his poop size and he will go less often because he will be digesting his food instead of the corn going right through him.

suggestions Comments By: Stitchdawg on 2010-11-29
Question: Ive always felt guilty about putting my dog on a lower quality food and never have. However she cannot eat grain free food as most of the protein content is far to high. She requires less than 22% protein and less than 10% fat and higher fiber if at all possible.

She is eating natural balance sweet potato and chicken she is a 50 pound dog and gets 2 cups a day. She has far too many bowel movements that stink aswell as her. So in saying so I havent had extreme success on expensive foods. She does fine on foods with grain and chicken is preferred. I am looking for a more inexpensive food that meets this criteria. Not crappy food, but i would be ok with foods that contain grains. I thinks she is a dog in this case that expensive and extreme quality is not the food that is going to work for her. However I would never feed pedigree etc.

Any suggestions ?

DID MY OWN TEST !!! Comments By: Reno on 2010-12-15
My son got a pitbull about 8 months old and had been feeding him Ole Roy. When he gave him to me at 10 months, the dog would sit and scratch, scratch and scratch. I did a 100% flea attack (dog, carpet, bedding and where he was allowed to roam) but he still scratched--It got so bad my skin would crawl just watching him!! Then I read about the ingredients in most cheap food and how they can cause problems- 1 of which was lots of scratching. After switching him (over 2 days) to the lamb, rice ingredients, he was not scratching as much and then no scratching--His coat is shiny and he doesn't poop as much. This new food was NaturalLife for puppies which I get from Walmart and it cost $3.00 more than Ole Roy. The only thing that changed was his food.

Reno Comments By: RVT on 2011-01-04
Pit Bull's as a breed are known to have a immune deficiency problem. You're dog could of been allergic to something in the food or allergic to flea saliva which is a more common problem. If you think that it is better for your pet and you see improvement then by all means keep doing whatever you can afford. However It is more than likely not due to cheap food. Most cheap foods use the same ingredients as the more expensive foods, with less meat proteins added.

I HOPE YOU COME BACK IN ANOTHER LIFE AS A DOG Comments By: Maireait Molloy on 2011-01-27
This is for the person who lets their dog drink out of the toilet. Human feces, urine, bacteria is no place for man's best friend to drink from. Then you feed him cheap by-product dog food. You do not know or care it is made of dead animals like dogs cats and sick rotten animals. Fat is included......Shame on you! Hope you use your dishes to feed him and let him lick your face.

"LET your dog drink out of the toilet"? Really?! Comments By: KC on 2011-02-27
I can't believe you even said that! LOL I have two boxers and a shih-poo. All of whom are healthy, eat well, and have plenty of water in their bowls all day long. The boxers STILL nose the toilet open and drink from the toilet. I have done everything short of latch the toilet lid closed. They simply PREFER the toilet. I clean my toilets every single day because it grosses me out that they do this. "LET" them?? Not even remotely. Just the way it is.
