Making a Used Book Into a New One

Submitted by Paul Pruitt

Ever buy a an out of print book online for a present only to find the dust jacket scratched?
There are some things you can do to make the book appear new.

  • Use a small amount of Windex to clean the cover (test first on the inside jacket). A clean cover is some much more friendly than a dirty one.
  • If the cover is dark, fill in nicks that appear white, with black felt or magic marker.

  • If there are gaps or tears in the cover tape them from the back or tape the appropriate color paper on the back. Look through magazines to find glossy photos the have similar backgrounds to the gap you are filling.
  • Use an archival cover from Brodart to cover the dust jacket. A sample group of six covers is available with super fast shipping for only $5 shipping and handling here:

  • If you are not a book collector, once you have repaired the tears, gaps and knicks, you can always laminate the cover at Kinkos, Staples or similar or on your own machine if it is wide enough. Be sure to ask for the laminating roller at Kinkos before the operation as folding laminated items after the film has cooled off can be difficult.
