To get a spill off your carpet and keep it from making a BIG stain: As soon as you spill something (soda, tea, coffee, etc.) Take a large folded bath towel and place over the spill then stand on top of the towel and keep moving your feet over the entire folded towel.
When you lift the towel up the entire spill will be soaked into the towel. Do not rub just step.
