My grandmother used to do this in her garden when she had a vegtable garden. She showed me and I thought it was funny. She put a bowl of beer in the garden and never had a problem with the slugs on the vegtables, all the slugs would go to the bowl of beer and drink themselves to death.
I'm not sure if this worked because of the region or climate but it worked in Alberta Canada
