Soot. Tips to remove Soot stains on clothes and fabric

If you have had a fire, and you have soot on fabrics and materials one of the first things that you should do is to shake all the soot from the fabrics that you can get out. You will have to do this outside of course.

Be sure to check if the material is dry clean only. Tell your dry cleaner if you have a soot problem so they can fight this soot problem for you.

Launder the fabric using a stain fighting detergent and a cup of vinegar. If you dont have the vinegar you can use bleach if the fabric states that you can. Wash only in the temperature that your fabric instructions states and hang to air dry. Inspect for stains and wash again as needed.

Some very difficult soot stains that will not come out include fabrics that are silky or contain spandex. Be sure to hand wash items if you are just washing one item so that they soot does not come out in the wash and onto your other clothes.
